Engineers at the University of Glasgow developed a synthetic skin of a prosthetic that produces its own energy through solar energy.

Researchers have created an "electronic skin" for fake hands made with the new super-material graphene.

The new skin is more sensitive to touch but requires a power source to operate its sensor.

Previously this required a battery, but the latest breakthrough has integrated photovoltaic cells into the skin.

Dr. Ravinder Dahiya from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Glasgow said: "The real challenge is 'How can we put the skin above the photovoltaic state and let the light pass through the skin?' This is what we do."

The use of graphene on the skin is a million times thinner than paper and is currently the strongest material in the world.
